I’d love to tell you, my friends, that dating a lawyer is no different than dating someone who has another profession.
But that would not be true.
I want my readers to fully understand the pros and cons of dating a lawyer. Usually, when you start dating someone, your life changes.
Something more powerful might happen as a result of dating a lawyer.
Thus, I am going to share the results of some research I have carried out lately. Below are seven things you need to know before dating a lawyer.
1. Lawyers think a bit differently
First of all, you need to know that your lawyer or law student partner is thinking differently from the rest of us. Their mind is trained to be objective. Their skill of critical thinking is acute and you need to deal with it. In hard situations, a person’s objectivity is really vital. But, when it comes to feelings and personal issues, you might feel a bit uncomfortable to notice that they are still trying to be objective. However, it does not mean that your partner does not love you. They are just objective and that’s it.
2. You will rarely win an argument with them
Lawyers’ job is generally to argue for a living. They analyze facts and incidents better than anyone else does. So, you are hardly ever going to win an argument with them. It’s just the way they are. Because they are trained to prove they are right.
3. A little party won’t kill you
Dating a lawyer means you need to have the best party wardrobe ever. Because lawyers frequently attend high-class events. You are sure to see people from Congress, as well as politicians and celebrities there.
Also, while many people think that the lawyers’ parties are boring. It’s not true. Lawyers hardly ever have free time and when they have some, they party to the fullest.
4. You are going to have some alone time
You are dating a workaholic. So, get used to the idea of having a lot of alone time. Lawyers are among the busiest people in this world. They are obviously not 9-5ers. So, do not expect them to have dinner with you at 7 p.m. Most often than not they are preparing a speech for a case or analyzing facts till 10 p.m.
5. You will get to learn legalese
Dating a lawyer also means indirectly absorbing all kind of legal information including legalese aka legal terms and jargon. This will serve you well, for at some point you will find out how savvy you have become when reading a contract.
Also, you are going to hear a lot of Latin words. I am not sure what benefits this will give you considering the fact that Latin is a dead language. Well, at least some people consider knowing an extra language sexy.
6. Your partner has got a huge student debt
If your lawyer is in the first few years of practice, then be sure he/she has got a huge student debt to pay off. So, it is up to you to consider this or not before you date them.
7. Lawyers like to negotiate
With a lawyer, you will hardly ever pay the full price again. I mean for anything! In most cases, your partner is going to use their lawyer charm to get discounts and some freebies. If you are attentive enough, you will learn this from them. And next time when you are alone, you will be able to get those same discounts too. It’s not that lawyers are cheap and do not want to pay the actual price. They just want to get as many benefits as possible.
These are the main things you need to know before diving into a relationship with a lawyer. Like in any other relationship, you will encounter difficulties. But who does not encounter them? If there is love, go for it!
