Class-action Status Granted to Nebraska SNAP Lawsuit

A judge has granted class-action status to a lawsuit claiming that Nebraska sequentially failed to process food-benefit applications and renewals on timely basis.
All recipients influenced by delays are allowed to challenge the state`s practices, according to the ruling.
Early in 2014 a lawsuit was filed in the name of Tami Leiting-Hall, a single, working mother from Lincoln. Lincoln-based Nebraska Appleseed and the National Center for Law and Economic Justice in New York represents the interests of Leiting-Hall.
The plaintiffs accuse the Department of Health and Human Service of creating unlawful delays for underprovided residents asked for benefits via the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Department functionaries refused to comment on pending lawsuits.
The ruling acknowledges the problem is not restricted to a few cases, Molly McCleery, a Nebraska Appleseed staff attorney states.
