A Class Action Lawsuit Against Airbnb

By on May 21, 2016

Airbnb Inc. is a website for people to find, rent and list lodging.
It has over 1,500,000 listings in 34,000 cities and 190 countries. A man from Virginia claims that he was denied service because of his racial identity.

Gregory Selden, 25, a black man from Virginia complained to the company that his reservation request was rejected because of his race. An Airbnb host in Philadelphia identified only as Paul was accused of violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other statutes in federal court in Washington, D.C. Despite that the claims haven’t yet been proven in court, Selden is seeking a class-action status. He claims that there are many people who have allegedly been influenced by such discriminations with the San Francisco-based Airbnb. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time the company is facing accusations in court. Airbnb has been sued over a few other alleged illegal acts. Hidden cameras at private rented rooms among them. An Airbnb spokesman claimed that they can’t take responsibility for individual cases. Nevertheless, the company does forbid discrimination based on sex, gender sexual orientation, national identity, etc. He stated that “We strongly believe that racial discrimination is unacceptable, and it flies in the face of our mission to bring people together. We are taking aggressive action to fight discrimination and eliminate unconscious bias in our community.”Even though Selden was told that the accommodation was not available, he stumbled upon the same listing after he was rejected by the Airbnb host, according to the suit,
