GM Extends Deadline for Ignition Switch Claims

By on November 18, 2014

Victims of accidents who are looking to file claims under General Motor`s defective-switch compensation program have an extra month to apply for reimbursement, as the deadline was extended to January 31, 2015, according to Kenneth Feinberg, an attorney overlooking the program.

In a web posting the program`s administrator said he has determined that families of 33 victims killed in GM vehicles with defective ignition switches are eligible for compensation. Feinberg has also stated that a notice of the deadline extension was sent to nearly 4.5 million current and previous owners of eligible GM cars.

The deadline is extended “out of an abundance of caution”, Reuters quotes Feinberg as saying.

General Motors has released a statement where it expresses consent to the deadline extension. The automaker once again has stated that its goal is «to reach every eligible person affected».

Nearly 2.6 million GM vehicles, including Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and others are under recall due to defective ignition switches that can slip out of the «run» position while the car is in motion, causing the engine to stall. That could disable brakes and power steering as well as the airbags.

General Motors has set up a fund to compensate victims of faulty ignition switches. The fund started to accept claims on August 1, and it got 1,851 claims for deaths and serious injuries due to the issue as of November 7.

General Motors is offering $25 gift cards to the owners of the several hundred thousand recalled Saturn Ions, Chevrolet Cobalts and other vehicles. This is a new incentive, which GM uses to get the vehicle owners to take their cars the dealerships in order to have their ignition switch repairs completed by December 1.

The offer is available to around 700,000 vehicle owners who still haven`t contacted a dealer to have their cars fixed. Those who have contacted the dealer or ordered parts are not eligible for the offer.

Before Kenneth Feinberg was appointed an administrator of uncapped compensation fund, the NHTSA and General Motors identified 13 related deaths. Since its appointment, Feinberg has approved 33 death claims and 39 injury claims eligible for compensation.
